Scouts.Digital has a new app for both Android and Apple phones or Tablets.... and a there is a new way of installing it
We have moved away from our discreet app that was hosted on the Google Play Store as we had some technical challenges with updating it and it was, really, an unwieldy way of delivering an App based experience
So, we decided to use some newer technology and now have a Web App that you can use on any modern mobile device, irrespective of Hardware or Operating System (on Android, on Apple, on Huawei, etc). There are 2 real limitations though.... Your phone should be newer than (about) 5 years old and be using either the Chrome, Brave, Edge, Opera or Safari web browser... and your apps need to be, reasonably, up to date
So, to install our new app, please follow the instructions below (Depending on your Operating System):
Firstly, open your browser and browse to https://ssa.scouts.digital from your mobile phone or tablet and login to the system, making a point of ticking the Remember Me check box
For Android Operating Systems
- You should see a Add To Home Screen or Install As An App popup at the bottom of your screen. Simply click Yes and the Scouts.Digital app will be installed (The text differs, based on your Android's OS Level)
- If you do not see this pop up, simply open your browsers menu and tap Add To Home Screen or Install This Site As An App (Typically the menu is located under the three vertical buttons at either the top or bottom of your browser)
For Apple Operating Systems
- Apple does not have an automated pop up, so installation will need to be done manually.
- Tap Share, scroll down and tap Add To Home Screen to add the Scouts.Digital app. (You may need to scroll right or left to see the Add To Home Screen button)
For Huawei Operating Systems
- You should see a Add To Home Screen or Install As An App popup at the bottom of your screen. Simply click Yes and the Scouts.Digital app will be installed
- If you do not see this pop up, simply open your browsers menu and tap Add To Home Screen or Install This Site As An App (Typically the menu is located under the three vertical buttons at either the top or bottom of your browser)
If you are interested in the mechanics, this is a Progressive Web App that uses your Browser to generate the App Experience on your phone or tablet
As a side note, our PWA can be installed as an app on your Desktop as well (Windows, Linux or Mac). Look for the Install As An App button in the top right of your Chrome, Edge or Chromium browser once you have logged in to Scouts.Digital
We are in the process of removing passwords from Scouts.Digital as they are unwieldy and a real challenge to manage. If you use the PWA App on your mobile device, Scouts.Digital will remember you and you will only be prompted to login occasionally (Ticking Remember Me on a mobile device does this)
